Best captain pick for GW38

The pick

Erling Haaland is the standout captain for GW38. He leads the week on expected points at 7.69 xP, comfortably clear of the field, and he gets a home fixture against Aston Villa. When the best projection also comes with the safest role, the highest ceiling, and the strongest team environment, it is usually the correct captaincy call. His 62.5% selection also tells you where the market is landing, and in the final gameweek there is little value in getting too clever when the most likely top scorer is obvious.

The only mild note of caution is that Haaland’s recent form is 5.4, which is good rather than explosive by his standards. Still, that is more than enough when paired with Manchester City’s attacking baseline and his penalty-box dominance. Compared with the rest of the premium options this week, Haaland has both the best raw projection and the best combination of floor and upside. If you are protecting rank or simply want the strongest percentage play, he is the captain.

Alternatives

Jarrod Bowen is the most convincing challenger if you want to oppose the crowd. He is projected for 4.63 xP, with form of 5.3 and a strong home match against Leeds. The gap to Haaland is still significant, but Bowen offers a nice blend of current output and a favourable fixture. At just 17.5% selected, he is also a realistic differential captain for managers chasing in mini-leagues.

Antoine Semenyo is another interesting route, especially for those already invested in Manchester City’s attack but looking away from Haaland. He has 4.58 xP, 4.2 form, and the same home fixture against Aston Villa. The appeal is obvious if you think City score well and the points get spread around. The problem is equally obvious, his projection still trails Haaland by more than three expected points, which is a big gap for captaincy.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin sits on 4.52 xP with 5.3 form, so he deserves a mention as a punt. The away game at West Ham is not as attractive as Bowen’s home fixture in the same match, and his team context is weaker than Manchester City’s by some distance. He is viable if you need a low-owned swing at 13.7% selection, but not the percentage captain.

Thiago is second by projection on 4.91 xP, which will catch the eye, but the profile is less convincing in practice. His 2.0 form is the weakest among the top five candidates, and an away trip to Liverpool is hardly ideal. Despite the respectable model number and 30.2% selection, he looks more like a data outlier than a captain I would actively back over the stronger all-round options.

The verdict

Captain Haaland. He is the clear leader on 7.69 xP, he plays at home, and he has the best mix of security, upside, and team strength in GW38. Bowen is the best differential, Semenyo is the best same-team alternative, and Calvert-Lewin is a long-shot punt, but none match Haaland for overall captaincy value this week.
