How to judge Bench Boost for GW8

Bench Boost only pays off if your four bench players are actually set to score. For GW8, that means scanning cheap assets for fixtures and form rather than reputation.

What matters this week

Three things decide this call for GW8:

  • Fixture strength. Several bench-priced options come from Man City and Crystal Palace, both at home or in matches where their underlying xP is high despite low ownership, such as Strand Larsen (5.12 xP) at home to NEW and Ndiaye (4.08 xP) away at AVL.
  • Form over price. De Cuyper at £5.2m carries a 7.0 form score and 5.21 xP away at LIV, proving cheap does not mean low ceiling.
  • Ownership as a signal of conviction. De Cuyper’s 40.0% selection and Verbruggen’s 22.4% show where the template has already settled, while names like Kamada (0.7% selected, 3.92 xP) and Emersonn (3.8%, 4.83 xP) are low-owned differentials worth a punt only if their fixture supports it.

How to weigh it

Price and ownership tell you what the crowd expects, but form and xP tell you what is actually likely to happen this week. A low-owned forward like Kostoulas (9.1% selected, 5.46 xP away at LIV) can outscore a heavily owned name if the underlying numbers back it up. When form and xP align, as with De Cuyper, that is a stronger signal than price alone. When they diverge, such as Calvert-Lewin’s 4.84 xP against a thin 1.3 form, lean toward the data point that is most recent: form.

Top picks per position

Goalkeepers

Trafford (£5.0m, 4.63 xP, form 4.0) away at SUN edges Donnarumma (4.58 xP, form 4.0) on price. Verbruggen remains the highest-form option at 5.0, though his 22.4% ownership limits differential upside.

Defenders

De Cuyper is the standout: 5.21 xP, form 7.0, away at LIV, at just £5.2m. Gvardiol (4.96 xP) and Guéhi (4.85 xP) both travel to AVL with City’s attacking backing.

Midfielders

No midfielder in this range clears 4.1 xP. Ndiaye (4.08 xP, MCI away at AVL) leads the pack, with Gomez (3.89 xP, form 4.3) as a cheaper, in-form alternative at £5.0m.

Forwards

Kostoulas tops the list at 5.46 xP away at LIV, followed by Strand Larsen at 5.12 xP in a home fixture against NEW. Both offer price efficiency under £6.0m.

Squad-fit notes

If your bench already leans on City or Brighton players for other chips, doubling up with De Cuyper or Kostoulas on Bench Boost concentrates risk on one fixture outcome. Spread picks across at least three different matches where possible.

If you are unsure

Default to De Cuyper and Kostoulas as anchors, since both combine top-tier xP with strong recent form, and fill around them with the cheapest goalkeeper and defender whose fixture you trust most.
