Triple Captain target for GW38

GW38 is a single gameweek, so the Triple Captain chip needs a much higher bar than usual. Without two fixtures to boost the floor, you are effectively betting on one elite matchup and one elite player converting that into a haul. That makes this week more about minimizing downside than chasing a differential miracle.

Best Triple Captain target: Erling Haaland

Haaland is the clear standout. He has the best projected score in the pool at 7.69 xP, comfortably ahead of every other option, and he also has the strongest combination of ceiling, role security and team context. Manchester City are at home to Aston Villa, and even in a single gameweek, that is the kind of fixture where backing the league’s premier finisher still makes sense.

His recent form of 5.4 is not explosive by his standards, but it is still solid, and the important point is that no one else comes close on projected output. The gap between Haaland and the next best candidate, Thiago at 4.91 xP, is massive for a captaincy call, and even more important for Triple Captain. If you are going to commit the chip in a single gameweek, you want the player with the clearest route to double digit points, and that is Haaland.

Why the fixture works

Home advantage matters, and City at home usually means territorial dominance, volume of chances and multiple routes to returns. Haaland does not need many chances to punish opponents, and his baseline route is simple, penalties, central shot volume and the highest team scoring expectation of the gameweek. With 62.5% selection, he is also the safest shield if you are protecting rank, while still offering the best upside.

If you want to push the case further, compare him directly to the alternatives. Bowen has a decent home fixture against Leeds and a respectable 4.63 xP with 5.3 form, but he still trails Haaland by a wide margin. Semenyo, listed here at 4.58 xP, benefits from the same City home fixture, but he is simply not the primary finisher in this side. Triple Captain should go on the player most likely to turn City pressure into a brace or hat trick, not the secondary option.

Who to avoid

  • Thiago, away to Liverpool, has 4.91 xP but only 2.0 form. That is not enough for a chip this aggressive, especially in a difficult away fixture.
  • Calvert-Lewin, away to West Ham, has 4.52 xP and 13.7% selection. Fine as a punt, not a Triple Captain candidate.
  • Semenyo is viable as a normal captain punt, but not over Haaland when both have the same home fixture and one is the focal point.

Verdict: In a single gameweek, restraint matters. Haaland is the only Triple Captain pick who clears the threshold for both safety and ceiling in GW38.
