GW8 is a single gameweek, not a double. That changes the entire calculus. Without a second fixture to inflate ceiling, you are chasing one match of production from one player, so the bar for using a chip you only get twice a season should be high.
What matters this week
- Fixture and matchup: Haaland travels to Aston Villa, while João Pedro and Palmer both get Chelsea’s home game against Tottenham. Isak is at home to Brighton, and Kostoulas travels to Liverpool.
- Form and underlying numbers: Haaland leads every metric that matters, an xP of 9.09 and current form of 8.3, well clear of the chasing pack.
- Ownership and risk: Haaland sits at 76.5% selected, so a Triple Captain there is a conviction play on a near-template asset, not a differential swing. João Pedro at 72.4% carries similar template risk but a lower xP of 7.54.
How to weigh it
In a single gameweek, xP and form should dominate the decision over fixture reputation or ownership. A player projected near 9 points clears the bar on raw output alone, even against a usually tough away fixture. Lower-owned options like Isak (xP 5.47, 12.3% selected) or Kostoulas (xP 5.46, 9.1% selected) could offer differential upside, but neither comes close to Haaland’s projected ceiling this week, and a single-gameweek TC rarely justifies reaching for a smaller edge when the top option’s numbers are this far ahead.
Top Triple Captain target: Haaland
Haaland is the clear pick. His xP of 9.09 and form of 8.3 are the best of any player in this set, and the gap to the next name, João Pedro at 7.54 xP, is significant. His away trip to Aston Villa doesn’t carry the glamour of a home fixture, but the underlying numbers say it doesn’t need to. At 76.5% ownership, this is a low-regret, conviction captaincy rather than a punt.
The Chelsea alternative
João Pedro (7.54 xP, home v Tottenham) and Palmer (5.52 xP, same fixture) both benefit from a favourable home matchup. João Pedro’s form of 4.7 is modest relative to his xP, and Palmer’s 26.1% ownership makes him more of a differential than a TC banker. Neither threatens Haaland’s case this week.
Who to avoid
Kostoulas, despite a promising 3.7 form reading, travels to Liverpool with an xP of just 5.46, the lowest of the five candidates. That is too thin a projection to risk a chip that only comes around twice a season.
If you are unsure
If in doubt, don’t use the chip this week. Save it for a double gameweek or a matchup where one player’s data separates itself as clearly as Haaland’s does here, and if you must pull the trigger, his 9.09 xP makes him the only defensible single-gameweek target.
