The pick

There is very little to argue about here. The combination of elite xP, strong form, and a home fixture makes Haaland the standout armband choice in GW3. If he delivers, you are moving with the majority. If you look elsewhere and he fires, you hand points back to most of your mini-league rivals.
Alternatives
Kai Havertz (ARS, £7.5m, xP 6.40) is the second-highest expected points return this week, with Arsenal hosting Chelsea. His xP of 6.40 is solid, and at just 7.5% ownership he offers genuine captaincy differential potential. The trade-off is his form sits at only 3.0, and captaining a 7.5% owned player requires confidence that the underlying numbers will convert on the day.
Thiago (BRE, £8.0m, xP 6.17) comes in third with Brentford at home to Sunderland. An xP of 6.17 is respectable, but his form rating of 0.0 is a concern. He is priced at £8.0m and selected by 16.4% of managers, making him a moderate differential. The 0.0 form figure is hard to overlook when allocating the armband.
Alexander Isak (LIV, £9.0m, xP 5.83) rounds out the alternatives worth considering. He travels away to Ipswich with an xP of 5.83, a form score of 1.0, and a 16.2% selection rate. The away fixture adds risk compared to the home games on offer elsewhere, and his form gives little additional reason to prefer him over the options above.
The verdict
Haaland gets the armband in GW3, and it is not a close call. A 9.18 xP, a form score of 7.5, and a home game against Coventry put him in a different category from every other candidate this week. Havertz is the only credible differential captain option if you are looking to stand out, but the 6.40 xP gap against Haaland is significant. Give the armband to Haaland, and move on.
